In the 1960s and 1970s, yellow taxis were a force to contend with in Madras. While this mode of transport was never as prolific as its contemporaries, it nonetheless had a presence, with the prepaid taxis at the airport being the chief representative. The yellow-black cab was gradually sidelined by services such as taxis on call and aggregator apps. By 2023, it has been reported that only 304 of them still ride around the city
